Down-under, reality takes a whiz on that neat concept, as this feature isn't even partially available in Australia. It gets better, though. And by 'it gets better' I mean 'the franken-monster has mutilated offspring. The new WMC has the ability to download a program guide and use this in conjunction with the time-scheduled record function. Fantastic, but I haven't tried it, because that's also missing in Australia. Sure, it's not Microsoft's fault, given the TV networks' wrangle over copyright on TV guides, but it's still no consolation for WMC users who miss out on a major piece of functionality.
Meanwhile, users of Linux media centres and some dedicated PVRs are happily sucking down TV guides from a variety of unofficial sources. Just to rub salt in our eyes, if a certain Wikipedia stub is to be believed, Australia was among the first countries in the world that had an online telly guide.
This was back in on this scorched rock -- you know, when electricity was still in its infancy and the 80's thing wouldn't die fast-enough? A quick look over at the UK Media Center discussion forums and it appears our monarchy siblings are equally miffed. To top off the pudding, we have closed-captions, or rather, we don't. Neither teletext nor DVB subtitle services are supported. What's going on here?
Considering the premium coinage it demands from Aussies, Microsoft ought to make the new Media Center worthwhile. I've found this new tuner on the BlackGold site. BGT :: 6 in 1 :: Dual digital satellite, Dual digital terrestrial, Dual analogue terrestrial :: PCI express card Blackgold is not very clear with the information, as per usaul.
Whilst they do say you will need additional software it is not clear as to whether it's just a Codec or an additional program. As Vista does not currently support multiple tuner types can receive all normal freeview channels via freesat? I asked BlackGold some similar questions and got the following responses: 1. Vista MCE also does not support natively support satellite but BlackGold have worked with Microsoft to address this issue.
BlackGold will supply drivers with this card that enable satellite to work with vista MCE. Thanks for your reply. Typical Microsoft, going on about HD and all that, and their own software does not support it. So whats different??? I suppose though if all else fails I could get Cyberlink and use that for watching HD and MCE for normal stuff, I expect Vista will catch up one day, it's even supposed to be able to support multiple tuner types from 2Q ! Are BlackGold tuners any good sensitvity, quality, reliability, etc?
I'm considering sending it back and getting a BlackGold, but want to check that they're better first. Click to expand Thanks Ron-Ski The stuttering is gone on viewing, recording and playback. This seems to narrow it down to the card. Strangely the playback of the Vista demo videos Apollo 13 clip is a bit jumpy, so perhaps I need to beef up the graphics card too.
